Best surfboards for surfers over 40

Most surfers over 40 catch more waves on more foam: a mid-length, a fuller hybrid or a thicker fish, sized a step bigger than what they rode at 25. Paddle fitness usually fades before skill does, so buy for the surfer you are this winter, not the one in your old photos.

What actually changes

Paddling endurance, pop-up speed and flexibility. None of that stops you surfing well. It means each wave costs more to catch, so the board should do more of the catching.

Volume is the cheap fix

If your sessions are shorter or your pop-up slower than it was, size from the newer-to-hardboards column below even if you have surfed for decades. A few extra liters is the difference between catching the set wave and watching it.

Length helps too, but width and thickness add liters without making the board as hard to turn.

Pick for your usual waves

A board that needs overhead power is not the one you will ride on a Tuesday in waist-high surf. The picks below are ranked for everyday knee- to head-high waves with soft to moderate power.

How we picked the boards

Boards come from the Quivr catalog and rank higher when their full wave-size range covers more of the everyday waves band and their power midpoint sits closer to it. Ratings only break close ties. Max two per brand.

Starting volume by weight

Same starting point as the Quivr app: weight in kilos × 0.60 if you are newer to hardboards, × 0.46 for an everyday surfer, × 0.40 if advanced. It is a starting volume, not a length.

FAQ

Can a 60 year old surf?

Yes. Plenty of people surf into their 70s. The board matters more with age: more volume and a board that catches waves early keep sessions fun.

What are the best surfboards for older surfers?

Boards with more foam that work in the waves you surf most: mid-lengths, fuller hybrids and thicker fish. The list on this page is ranked from Quivr catalog wave ranges for everyday surf.

Should I go back to a longboard?

If your waves are mostly small and slow, a longboard will get you the most waves. If you still want to turn in steeper waves, a mid-length keeps the paddle without the length.
